Apple Solution

A basket contains 5 apples. Do you know how to divide them among 5 kids so that each one has an apple and one apple stays in the basket?

Solution

 Answer to this riddle goes as follows: 4 kids get an apple (one apple for each one of them) and the fifth kid gets an apple with the basket still containing the apple.

You have 12 black socks and 12 white socks mixed up in a drawer. You're up very early and it's too dark to tell them apart. What's the smallest number of socks you need to take out (blindly) to be sure of having a matching pair?

Solution 

3 socks. If the first sock is black, the second one could be black, in which case you have a matching pair. If the second sock is white, the third sock will be either black and match the first sock, or white and match the second sock.

13 x 3 + 1 = 40

Explanation:

The number of decks is irrelevant i.e any number of decks can be mixed and still the answer would be same.
Any card drawn will be a Ace,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,Jack,Queen or King, so there are 13 possibilities each time a card is drawn.
The fastest and luckiest way would need just 4 cards of the same kind.

The slowest way is our solution as it will guarantee a four of a kind.
i.e draw 3 of each kind =>39 cards will be fetched. now next card will guarantee 4 of a kind.
